ESCWA Workshop in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on: " National Strategy for Digital Government"

Within the framework of the technical cooperation program implemented by ESCWA in cooperation with its Member States, and upon the request of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MoICT) in Jordan to provide technical assistance in convening a capacity building workshop in the development of e-government strategies, and to advise on the needed roadmap to develop the national digital government strategy, ESCWA carried out a workshop in Amman on 6 and 7 November 2017.
Represented by Dr. Haidar Fraihat, Director of Technology for Development Division (TDD), and Dr. Nawar Al-Awa, Regional Adviser in TDD, ESCWA delivered five presentations in addition to moderating some sessions in the workshop.
A capacity building workshop on the development of e-government strategies was inaugurated at the MoICT in the presence of the Secretary General of the Ministry, Mr. Nader Thunaibat, and with the participation of more than 50 participants from various national agencies. In his opening speech, Dr. Fraihat highlighted ESCWA working areas and themes, them he focused on the role of technology in achieving the sustainable development agenda. Then, Dr. Al-Awa delivered two presentations on the concepts, strategies, trends and indicators of e-government.
On the second day, devoted to the discussion of the road map of the national strategy of the digital government, Dr. Al-Awa delivered two presentations on best practices in digital government strategies from and outside the Arab region, and provided ESCWA's proposal to develop the national strategy.
In the closing session, Workshop participants recommended to initiate the work on the national strategy as per the suggested steps, and to continue the cooperation with ESCWA along the various development steps.
Workshop participants expressed their appreciation of the scientific content through the discussions and evaluation carried out at the end of the workshop. Discussions also highlighted the need for such workshops and emphasized the importance of capacity-building and advisory services provided by ESCWA in coordination with national partners.
On the sidelines of this workshop, ESCWA held several meetings with representatives of the Ministry of Planning (MoP), Central Bank of Jordan (CSJ), National Information Technology Center (NITC) and MoICT to discuss technical cooperation with ESCWA in the area of technology for development.
