Within the framework of the technical cooperation program implemented by ESCWA in cooperation with its Member States, and upon the request received from the Ministry of Solidarity, Women, Family and Social Development in the Kingdom of Morocco to provide technical support in convening a capacity-building workshop on the use of technology to enhance the accessibility of persons with disabilities (PwD), and to explore the possibility of developing an action plan to operationalize digital accessibility, ESCWA conducted a workshop in Rabat on 29 November 2017.
Represented by Ms. Gisela Nauk, Chief of the Inclusive Social Development Policies Section, and Dr. Nawar Al-Awa, Regional Advisor on Technology for Development, ESCWA conducted this workshop by delivering a number of presentations as well as by moderating some workshop sessions.
The workshop was opened by the Director of the Department of Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the Ministry Mr. Rachid El-Guenouni, and with the participation of more than 30 participants from different national bodies and NGOs. Dr. Al-Awa presented ESCWA's address, then Ms. Nauk delivered a presentation on plans and strategies to ensure the rights of persons with disabilities.
In the 2nd session, Dr. Al-Awa presented the main concepts and standards of e-Accessibility, then focused on key indicators to measure PwD access to ICT.
Workshop participants in the closing session recommended to continue the cooperation with ESCWA to develop an action plan to implement digital accessibility in Morocco, in cooperation with the Ministry.
Workshop participants expressed their appreciation of the substantive content through the discussions and evaluation carried out at the end of the workshop. Discussions and meetings also highlighted the need for such workshops and emphasized the importance of capacity building and advisory services provided by ESCWA in coordination with national partners.
In addition to this workshop, ESCWA held a number of meetings with the Ministry of Solidarity, Women, Family and Social Development, the Ministry of Industry, Trade, Investment and Digital Economy (MICIEN), the "Vision Technology" Association, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ANRT), and the Supreme Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HACA), to explore their role in the suggested national action plan related to the use of technology to promote PwD access.
